The NCAAB Tournament is roughly two months away and, surprisingly, a team from the ACC doesn’t even appear in the top 5.
Usually at this time either North Carolina or Duke is receiving praise from every commentator and analyst on the planet. That’s not the case this season as its a team from Lexington looks to be the best in college hoops. The Big 12, because of two teams, looks to be the power conference.
Here’s a run down of the ACC, SEC and Big 12
ACC
The ACC is looking awfully strong in terms of how many teams they will put into the NCAAB Tournament but none of those teams appear capable of making a run to the Final Four. Virginia is 12 and 4. Duke is 15 and 2. Clemson is 15 and 3. Maryland is 11 and 5. Florida State is 14 and 4. Georgia Tech is 14 and 4. Wake Forest is 12 and 4. Virginia Tech is 14 and 3. Miami-Florida is 15 and 3. Only North Carolina, Boston College and North Carolina State appear destined to not make it into the NCAAB Tournament.
That’s all going to change soon as the ACC heads into conference play, and someone has to lose. Right now, the top team looks to be Duke whom has lost only two games. The first loss was to the Wisconsin Badgers from the Big Ten. The second loss was to Georgia Tech on the road. Duke at this point, with John Scheyer and Kyle Sigler providing a one-two punch, is the lone team in the ACC that looks capable of getting into the Final Four.
SEC
In the SEC East, Kentucky is 18 and 0, Vanderbilt is 14 and 3 and Tennessee is 14 and 2. In the SEC West, Mississippi State is 15 and 3 and Mississippi is 13 and 4. The obvious contender for the NCAAB Championship is Kentucky who is 18 and 0 and appears to actually be getting better with freshman John Wall tearing it up and coach John Calipari giving his fellas enough direction for them to play with heart each and every time they step onto the court.
Kentucky has taken down Connecticut, Louisville, North Carolina and Stanford in out of conference play. The 18 and 0 is more legitimate than any of Calipari’s undefeated Memphis teams and Kentucky is, well, Kentucky. They’re going to be awfully tough in the tournament.
Is there anything wrong with Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Mississippi? Nope, but they don’t appear to have enough at this point to get to the Final Four.
Big 12
This conference is loaded with good teams. Besides 17 and 1 Texas and 16 and 1 Kansas, the Big 12 boasts 16 and 2 Kansas State and 14 and 4 Missouri. Baylor is 14 and 2, Oklahoma State is 13 and 4 and Texas A&M is 12 and 5. The Big 12 could potentially send up to 9 teams to the March Madness Tournament, but how many of those teams have a real shot to get to the Final Four?
Texas and Kansas are both legit contenders and both could get a top seed. If that happens, it wouldn’t’ be a stretch to see Texas and Kansas in the Final Four. There just aren’t a lot of weaknesses on either squad. Baylor could surprise, but the team that NCAAB betting fans should keep an eye on is Kansas State.
K-State just upset Texas 71 to 62 and has two terrific guards, a pre-requisite for winning the NCAAB Tournament, in Jacob Pullen and Denis Clemente. Clemente averages 14 points and 4 assists a game while Pullen averages 19 points and 3 assists per game. Clemente and Pullen work extremely well together. It could lead to a Final Four appearance for the Wildcats.
