The NFL playoffs may be taking center stage in the overall North American sporting scene, but NBA lovers everywhere should know that there is plenty of money to be made by betting on pro NBA basketball.
With the 2009-10 NBA regular season steamrolling toward its annual all-star break next month, this look at the hottest and coldest ATS teams in the league will give NBA gamblers the insight they need to make a series of winning wagers over the course of the coming week.
With a full slate of NBA action taking place in the NBA Sportsbook on a near daily basis, let me get started.
"HOT"
These teams are covering the spread at a high rate over their last five games, cashing in for pro hoops gamblers in at least four games.
L.A. Clippers 5-0 ATS
The Clippers (16-18-1 ATS) have won four straight and five of six heading into Monday night while going a perfect 6-0 ATS during the stretch. Call me crazy, but I’m thinking the Clippers have what it takes to sneak into the playoffs in the Western Conference this season.
Warriors 4-1 ATS
I keep telling NBA betting enthusiasts that the Warriors (19-15-1 ATS) are going to cover the spread in a ton of games this season with their high-powered offense and Golden State continues to prove me right despite their SU struggles. The Warriors have won two consecutive games heading into the new week while covering the NBA moneyline in three straight and seven of the last eight games overall.
Hornets 4-1 ATS
Don’t look now, but the New Orleans Hornets (17-18 ATS) have gotten their act together recently, winning six straight games while going an impressive 5-1 ATS during the span. With upcoming games against Philadelphia, Detroit and Indiana, the Hornets appear to be a good bet to continue their torrid ATS pace.
Bulls 4-1 ATS
The Bulls (15-18-2 ATS) have been mostly pathetic this season but have managed to win five of their last eight games while covering the NBA point spread in three straight games and seven of eight overall.
"NOT"
These teams are failing to cover the NBA moneyline for NBA gamblers but could also be money-makers for gamblers that wager against them more often than not right now.
Minnesota 1-4 ATS
See what happens when you foolishly choose point guards with consecutive first round picks at No. 5 and No. 6? The T-Wolves (18-20 ATS) have lost six of their last seven games while going 1-4 ATS over the last five. Unless the Wolves are getting a bunch of points or one of their matchups looks really, really, inviting, I’d wager against them more often than not.
Orlando 1-4 ATS
Despite being one of the elite teams in the league right now, the Magic (19-18 ATS) have struggled to cash in lately, going just 1-4 ATS over their last five. Orlando did manage to cover the NBA point spread their last time out and do have a winning ATS record this season, so I wouldn’t expect the Magic to continue failing to cover the spread at a high rate.
Detroit 1-4 ATS
I can’t believe how low the Pistons (15-19-1 ATS) have sunken but I guess I’d better get used to this team being a lot less than mediocre as they head into the new week riding a pitiful 12-game losing streak. Detroit has failed to cover the NBA moneyline in two straight games and nine of its last 10 overall.
Oklahoma City 1-4 ATS
The Thunder (21-15 ATS) have been one of the most pleasant surprises in the league this season but have struggled to cash in for backers lately with their 1-4 ATS mark over their last five. However, I wouldn’t go expecting this team to continue to struggle against the spread as Oklahoma City has generally been one of the best defensive teams in the league all season long.
Sacramento 1-4 ATS
Much like the aforementioned ballclub, the Sacramento Kings (19-14-3 ATS) have been one of the best early-season surprises in the league with a never-say-die mentality and supremely gifted rookie point guard in Tyreke Evans. Sacramento has gone 1-5 SU and 1-4-1 ATS over its last six games but should be able to continue covering the NBA moneyline at a high rate as Evans missed some of the recent games they’ve lost as he sat out with an ankle injury.
