Pete Carroll’s has resigned as head coach of the USC Trojans after nine years to join the Seattle Seahawks as Head Coach. The following is a breakdown of why this is a win –win situation for Carroll and the Seahawks.
5. Third time’s a charm: Carroll is no stranger to the NFL; he was head coach for the Jets in 1994 and for the Patriots from 1997 to 1999. It’s hard to believe the Patriots organization became a dynasty in the year 2000 right after Carroll left. Carroll will be looking to prove to the critics that he has what it takes to be an elite coach in the NFL.
Let’s be honest, the guy probably needs a break from all the college kids who’s mind may not be in the right place. After winning two national championships in the NCAA he is looking to leave his mark in a big way coaching his third NFL team.
4. Place: People in Seattle don’t care about pro sports unless they are winning; they gave away a NBA franchise to Oklahoma because of the lack of interest. Seattle isn’t New York. Carroll will be able to run his team his way and not the way the media wants him to.
3. Division: Let’s be honest, right now the NFC west is one of the worst divisions in all pro football. Arizona has won the division title the last two years in a row. The Rams are rebuilding and the 49ers have no designated starting QB.
This may be Kurt Warner’s last year in the league and he will turn the reins over to Matt Leinhart who isn’t a NFL caliber QB. Anquan Boldin is looking to “greener” pastures. So if Carroll is able to bring in some young talent the Seahawks could be 1-2 years away from winning the division.
2. Roster: Matt Hasselbeck will return with the team next year. Seattle will have an experienced QB that could be able to play for about 2-3 more years. This allows the new GM and Carroll to draft a QB of the future who will have Hasselbeck as his teacher for a couple of seasons.
Seattle hasn’t been a running team since they let offensive guard Steve Hutchinson go to the Vikings. But with Julius Jones and Justin Forsett their run game could be worse.
Seattle’s wide receiver core with Nate Burleson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Deion Brach is strong enough to carry the team.
With a few additions to the defensive side of the ball this roster could fight for a playoffs spot next year.
1. Draft position: After this regular season the Seahawks have the 6th overall pick in the draft. QBs like Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clause or Tim Tebow will be available. Look for Seattle to pick San Bradford.
