NFL Draft Watch - 2010 Top 10 Picks

2010 NFL Draft Watch – Defensive Players Lead the Way

Thanks to some curious finishes in the NFL regular betting season, the Bucs and Lions join the Rams at the top of the scrap heap in the upcoming, and highly touted, 2010 NFL draft. With big names like Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen and Ndamukong Suh entering the pro ranks, teams are going to be clamoring to move up and down. If you’re a draft junkie like me, you’ll be glued to the news reels to see who’s going where. I’ll make it easy for you by sifting through the hype.

1. St. Louis Rams (1-15)

Undeniably their biggest need is at quarterback. The problem here is that quarterbacks aren’t ranking in the top-10 for overall draft grades. The best quarterbacks in this draft are going to be Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame and Sam Bradford of Oklahoma. Tim Tebow may be a saint in Florida, but scouts see him as a dud, or as I like to call him: “The White JaMarcus Russell”.

If Bradford hadn’t separated his shoulder during the college betting season, he’d be a mortal lock for the Rams. With that shoulder requiring treatment, and Bradford being MIA throughout 2009, Clausen took the chance to steal the spotlight. He’s one of the only top tier college quarterbacks that played away from his home state (he hails from California) and is used to the pro system after playing for Charlie Weis.

Rams Draft Pick: QB - Jimmy Clausen (Notre Dame)

2. Detroit Lions (2-14)

Sadly, the days of Matt Millen hilarious screw ups in the Lions’ draft are long gone. The problem here is that the Lions will have to make a tough decision on whether to take Suh, or draft Russell Okung from Oklahoma State, who is the top-rated offensive lineman in the draft thus far. Protecting their top-pick last year, Matthew Stafford, will likely be the top priority for the Lions after watching Stafford get murdered during the Cleveland Browns game.

Lions Draft Pick: OT – Russell Okung ( Oklahoma State)

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-13)

Tampa’s defense has been ravaged by piss poor drafting but that could all change if the Bucs turn Suh in to the second coming of Warren Sapp. The Bucs will do anything to get Suh and turn their defense around. They’ll even trade up with the Rams to get him.

Bucs Draft Pick: DT – Ndamukong Suh ( Nebraska)

4. Washington Redskins (4-12)

The Redskins love their defensive ends, and with the fourth overall spot they can grab the best one in the draft. Derrick Morgan isn’t a household name yet, but the Georgia Tech pass-rusher is going to be when he lands in Dan Snyder’s house.

Redskins Draft Pick: DE – Derrick Morgan (Georgia Tech)

5. Kansas City Chiefs (5-11)

The Chiefs can take anyone they want to because they’re that bad across the board. I think that a team desperate for some respect will take a hard hitting safety that can earn it for them.

Chiefs Draft Pick: S – Taylor Mays (USC)
6. Seattle Seahawks (5-11)
Matt Hasselbeck will probably come back next season, but he won’t last forever and they need a quarterback for their future. Sam Bradford will be sitting here waiting to take the job when Hasselbeck is done. I’m pretty sure the Seneca Wallace experiment is over.
Seahawks Draft Pick: QB – Sam Bradford ( Oklahoma)
7. Cleveland Browns (5-11)
Cleveland will have to wait to see what Mike Holmgren decides to do with the confusing mess he has at quarterback. I don’t think Brady Quinn’s career in Cleveland is necessarily over, and Cleveland has a bevy of NFL picks to use in this draft (thanks to the New York Jets). Rebuilding will happen and it starts for Holmgren on the defensive side of things.
Browns Draft Pick: DT – Gerald McCoy ( Oklahoma)
8. Oakland Raiders (5-11)
JaMarcus Russell might be done and if anybody is going to grab the attention of the immortal (bad decision making of) Al Davis, it’s – you guessed it – Tim Tebow.
Raiders Draft Pick: QB – Tim Tebow ( Florida)
9. Buffalo Bills (6-10)
The Bills have no idea who’s going to be coaching the team in 2010, let alone quarterbacking the offense. The defense was ravaged by injuries which will heal in the summer. Now that Marshawn Lynch is staring down the barrel of another off-season with legal problems and is likely to be waved now that the Bills are clearing house and rebuilding. This team is going to look for a safety valve on offense. There is no better multi-purpose player in the draft than…
Bills Draft Pick: RB – C.J. Spiller (Clemson)
10. Miami Dolphins (7-9)
Injuries killed the Dolphins on offense as they lost Ronnie Brown and Chad Pennington. If that doesn’t scream for some offensive line help, then I don’t know what does. They have two great running-back with plenty left to give, and they’ll target a wide-receiver in the second-round for sure. But in a division that boasts the New York Jets and New England Patriots, their defense is going to need a kick in the junk. The front-seven could certainly use some help, but the secondary talent in this draft is too enticing. The Dolphins would like their pick between Earl Thomas, Eric Berry or Taylor Mays but I have a feeling Mays will be outworldy during team interviews and the combine.
Dolphins Draft Pick: S – Eric Berry ( Tennessee)
