Wild-Card Round Review

They came, they saw, and they put the NFL odds to shame. Three underdogs advanced from the Wild Card Round this past weekend, giving bettors plenty to think about for next week's Divisional action. Here's how it all went down.

Saturday

New York Jets 24, Cincinnati Bengals 14 (Jets +2.5)

Before this matchup, Jets head coach Rex Ryan claimed his team should be favored to win the Super Bowl. Well, they're getting closer, moving their NFL betting line up from 45-1 to 14-1 on the futures market. Ryan's top-ranked defense came up big Saturday by holding Cincinnati to 110 yards passing; however, Bengals QB Carson Palmer's poor throwing mechanics were also on display in front of a national audience. Both teams excelled on the ground to cash in the OVER on the tiny total of 34.

The bigger story in this contest was the superior game management of Jets rookie QB Mark Sanchez. He had his best day of the season by proving less can be more, connecting on 12 of 15 pass attempts for 182 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions. The superior Jets special teams also earned a game ball when place-kicker Jay Feely was forced to assume punting duties for Steve Weatherford (dizziness). Feely handled seven punts and pinned the Bengals inside their own 20-yard line on four occasions.

Dallas Cowboys 34, Philadelphia Eagles 14 (Cowboys -3.5)

The Eagles went into this matchup with plenty of bona fides as the most efficient team in the NFL, but also with two regular-season losses to the Cowboys. That proved to be more important to handicappers, as Dallas kept the beat going with a shutdown defensive performance, forcing four turnovers (three fumbles, one pick) and holding the Eagles to 56 yards rushing.

Tony Romo, meanwhile, was a model of efficiency for Dallas, hitting 23 of 35 passes for a pair of touchdowns and again, zero interceptions. Nothing much went right for the Eagles in comparison. Their play of the day was a 76-yard TD strike from Michael Vick to Jeremy Maclin to knot the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. Donovan McNabb was sacked four times behind an offensive line that clearly missed injured starting center Jamaal Jackson.

Sunday

Baltimore Ravens 33, New England Patriots 14 (Ravens +4)

As expected, the betting public came flooding in on the Patriots over the weekend, and it cost them. Baltimore rattled off three straight rushing touchdowns in the opening quarter, including an 83-yard romp up the middle by Ray Rice on the first play after kick-off. The stellar Ravens defense took over from there, picking off Tom Brady three times and forcing him into a fumble as well. Brady did find WR Julian Edelman (replacing the injured Wes Welker) in the end zone twice, but Baltimore was able to focus on stopping Randy Moss, holding him to five passes for 48 yards.

With the Ravens so dominant on the ground (52 rushes for 234 yards), QB Joe Flacco was largely an afterthought, hitting four of 10 passes for 34 yards and a pick in the cold weather at Foxborough. This loss is ultimately on the Patriots defensive line, which was bowled over by Baltimore in the trenches. Brady was 7-0 in the playoffs at Gillette Stadium going into Sunday's contest.

Arizona Cardinals 51, Green Bay Packers 45 (Cardinals +3)

This is the one they'll be talking about around the water cooler this week. Neither defense showed up until the final play in overtime, when CB Michael Adams stripped the ball from Aaron Rodgers and LB Karlos Dansby took it to the house to extend Arizona's season. The Packers came close to winning and covering in overtime, but Rodgers overthrew a wide-open Greg Jennings. Before that, Neil Rackers whiffed from just 34 yards out on what would have been the game-winning field goal for Arizona with nine seconds left in regulation.

The Packers led the league with 40 takeaways during the regular season. On Sunday, they had only one on a fumble as Kurt Warner hit 29 of his 33 passes for five touchdowns. Rodgers nearly mounted a shocking comeback with four TD passes of his own after the Cards took a 17-0 lead into the second quarter. In case you were wondering, the OVER cashed in on the total of 48.5 points.
