Now that 2010 has arrived, it's time for us to look at the stories that you should keep an eye on as 2010 progresses in the college basketball betting world.
Who will the Cinderella be of this year's ball? Every single year, there's a team that comes out of nowhere to shock the world and knock out some unsuspecting major conference teams. The likely candidates of Gonzaga, Butler, New Mexico, and Xavier are still around as always, but there is bound to be a small team from a tiny conference to play the role of spoiler. It should be fun to see which team that will be this Spring.
Big East: Eleven Tourney Teams Possible... Or More! Look at how many teams already have at least ten wins in the Big East! Especially after watching Pittsburgh march into Syracuse and take out the Orange and seeing Seton Hall fight tooth and nail with West Virginia, it's hard to separate these teams. They'll all duke it out during conference play, but even eight wins for so many of these teams will give them all high RPIs. The teams in this conference have gone a stunning 150-36 in non-conference play so far in '09-'10, and the RPIs for these teams are all through the roof. If parody remains the theme in the Big East, there are going to be a whole bunch of 19 and 20 win teams that are going to have a great gripe to go dancing.
Pac-10: Just a one bid league? On Saturday, Washington's loss at home to Oregon was a shocking one. But unlike in the Big East, where dominance out of conference has been the key, the Pac-10 is a conference that just doesn't have all that much to write home about. Every chance that someone has had in this league to make a big statement is wasted, and the end result may be a lot of poor RPIs. A bunch of 9-7 and 8-8 teams in this conference will ultimately result in similar 19 or 20 win squads, but unlike in the Big East where 20 wins is impressive, 20 in the Pac-10 won't look nearly as good.
How long will the perfects stay perfect? After this weekend, there will be only four undefeated teams left standing in the nation. Obviously, either Kansas or Texas is going to be bounced from their perfect rankings when they meet each other in their college basketball betting battle on February 8th. However, is it really reasonable to think that either Kentucky or Purdue can pull off the completely perfect season? The Wildcats will get a challenge in Gainesville on January 12th, but unless someone is coming into Lexington and knocking them off, the next candidate to really throw a challenge to UK might not come until February in the trip to Starkville. Purdue's path appears to be significantly harder, because there's bound to be a slip up somewhere in road games with Wisconsin, Northwestern, Illinois, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Minnesota still to come.
