Are you a former coach under Bill Belichik? Have you suddenly experienced nauseating defeat as a head coach after leaving the nest in New England? Are you the laughing stock of fans, peers and the betting community? Are you desperate for a job? Well don’t you worry because the Kansas City Chiefs are HERE FOR YOU!
General Manager Scott Pioli continues to try and recreate the New England Patriots v.2.0 right in the heart of Missouri by bringing on any former Patriot that he can. Todd Haley, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals, is the head coach but he’s about to be surrounded by a man who piled up a 35-27 SU record at Notre Dame. Sounds pretty decent right?
You couldn’t be more wrong. Charlie Weis rode the coattails of the former recruiting staff at Notre Dame to a 19-6 SU record in his first two years. Using the players that he brought in, Weis went an abysmal 16-21 SU with the Fighting Irish and has since been fired and replaced by Brian Kelly.
Charlie Weis will fill the role of offensive coordinator if and when this deal is finalized within the next 48 hours. To be honest, that’s the role that Weis rightfully belongs in. He pioneered a new offense in New England when he arrived their in 1999 and to help Belichik earn three Super Bowl titles.
Weis is the first part of Patriots 2.0 in Kansas and he may be joined by former defensive coordinating ally Romeo Crennel. Last seen as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Crennel went 24-40 SU over four sports betting seasons with the Browns. But Pioli shouldn’t stop there. He should also make the following moves to further the rebuilding of the Kraft Dynasty in the Midwest.
Quarterbacks Coach - Drew Bledsoe
Before being replaced by Tom Brady, Bledsoe was the mainstay in New England from 1993-2001 before strolling over to the Bills and finally as a backup to Tony Romo in Dallas. He now owns – get this – a winery and is as far from football as can be. Who better to coach Matt Cassel than Brady? After all, they both lost their jobs to Brady.
Wide Receivers Coach – Troy Brown
As the all-time leader in receptions for the Patriots with 557, Brown was a three-time Super Bowl champion and a Pro Bowler in 2001. He was often seen as the product of a productive system, and if anyone can get the most out of the crap shooting receivers in Kansas, it’s Brown. He can certainly coach Dwayne Bowe and Chris Chambers on “how to get the most out of limited athletic ability”.
Head of Scouting – Eric Mangini
Though Mangini’s fate with the Browns is undetermined, mostly everyone in the organization thinks that Mike Holmgren is going to give Mangini his walking papers. With a coaching record of 28-36 SU with the Jets and Browns, Mangini is anything but a “Man Genius”. If Mangini’s current track record holds true, he’ll simply follow the career path of Romeo Crennel…who has been unemployed for the past year. Pioli, your man is going to be available on the cheap…but I wouldn’t let him anywhere near the sidelines.
All joking aside, the mission of Scott Pioli to simply mimic the dynasty crafted by the New England in Kansas is destined to fail because it’s missing the most important element of the Patriots’ success: Bill Belichik. There’s a time and a place where great coach’s like Josh McDaniels can emerge from a coaching tree filled with bad apples (none of Belichik’s disciples have gone on to enjoy success at the NFL level as a head coach).
Scott Pioli is ruining his legacy by trying to recreate the one that Belichik built in New England. Bringing in Charlie Weis is one of many steps in a long path of bad decisions by the new general manager of the Chiefs.
