PGA Roundup

Jim Furyk won for the first time in almost two years, but nobody seems to care.

That’s what happens when one of the most popular individuals in the world, Tiger Woods, makes money in the same profession that you do and has issues. Woods is a celebrity who sleeps around. Sorry, Jim, but your accomplishment this past weekend pales in comparison.

Before getting into Furyk’s win, and it was an important victory for the man, let’s get the Tiger stuff out of the way. It appears that Mr. Woods has slept with more than one woman who was not his wife the past few years. It also appears that Mr. Woods is somewhat of a wuss.

A real man would have played in his own tournament after suffering nothing but lacerations. Tiger, I know that you’re a tough guy, walking up and down that golf course with a busted knee in the U.S. Open in 2008 proved that, but to step away from the sponsors of your tournament because you are afraid to talk to the media is ridiculous.

Nobody believes that Tiger didn’t play because of his injuries this past weekend. I mean, it’s not like he was suffering from turf toe or a ruptured spleen or a concussion. The man had lacerations to his face. Boo hoo.

All of this will end up badly for El Tigre, of course. Golf is considered a family sport by more than one individual in the United States. Tiger was the quintessential family man who also happened to be the best golfer in the world. Now, he’s just another man whore who hits golf balls.

And, he’s lost a dear friend in Jesper Parnevik. Parnevik and his wife employed Tiger’s wife Elin as their nanny and introduced the two. Now, Jesper’s feeling like he really let Elin down.

Who could prosper out of this? Phil Mickelson. While Tiger was potentially banging cocktail waitresses in every city he visited this past year, Phil took some time off to be with his wife who was battling cancer. Mickelson is the second most respected athlete, marketing wise, in the United States after El Tigre.

Let me think about this for a moment. I got two guys to pitch my product to. One of them costs a mega-fortune and cheats on his wife. The other costs just a fortune and quits the game to take care of his wife.

Who would you go with?

Furyk’s Victory Meaningful

Jim Furyk’s Victory in the Chevron World Challenge, where he shot a -13, this past weekend, was meaningful because it was Furyk’s first since 2007. He also beat a stellar field.

Going into the final round, Furyk trailed Graeme McDowell and Y.E. Yang. McDowell is known throughout golfing circles as a world class player and Yang beat Tiger for the USPGA Championship. McDowell wasn’t even going to play in the event until Tiger Woods pulled out of it.

McDowell finished second to Furyk followed by Padraig Harrington and Lee Westwood. Harrington is well known in the United States. Westwood was coming off of the richest golfing event in the world, the European Tour’s Race to Dubai. Westwood, in essence, is the top ranked golfer in Europe.

So, Furyk’s victory shouldn’t be discounted just because Woods wasn’t in the field. Furyk beat the USPGA Champion in Y.E. Yang, the 2008 British Open and USPGA champ in Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell who is considered a top flight golfer, and the European champ in Lee Westwood.

Good job, Furyk. Oh, yes, he also wore red, Tiger’s color on Sundays, which I thought was a really nice touch.

Allenby Takes Home Africa’s Major

The Nedbank Challenge, dubbed Africa’s Major, lost some luster after the 20 year old Rory McIlroy withdrew. Without McIlroy in the field, Robert Allenby’s victory in the Nedbank can’t be considered as impressive as Furyk’s in the Chrevron.

But, Allenby did win. So, he gets a shout out. He beat Henrik Stenson in a sudden death playoff to take home the Nedbank Challenge trophy. Again, the victory wasn’t as impressive as Furyk’s, but it was still a victory.
