1. Mark Ingram (RB) – Alabama Crimson Tide
Ingram needs some serious stat padding in the final game of the year to secure his Heisman Trophy candidacy, and a 102-yard performance with two touchdowns on only 11 carries against Chattanooga was a nice tip of the hat from Nick Saban. The biggest problem for Ingram is that he’s solely here because Tebow, McCoy, Bradford and every other quarterback on the list have had sub-par seasons.
With Gerhart more than doubling his touchdown total, Ingram isn’t making the biggest case out there but being the integral cog of the Tide gets him the top mention this week.
Next Game: Alabama (-12.5) vs. Auburn
2. Colt McCoy (QB) – Texas Longhorns
How’s 396-yards and four touchdowns for ya, pollsters? With most quarterbacks in the league either losing big games, or failing to put up huge numbers, McCoy slammed his foot down on the pedal and didn’t let up as he led Texas to a Big 12 South title. McCoy’s case for the Heisman is more so based on his outstanding career. He leads the NCAA in wins (43) and has virtually every single school record at Texas. Is it enough to get him the Heisman? I’m not sure, but it’s definitely enough to get him to NYC in the front row.
Next Game: Texas (-22.5) vs. Texas A&M
3. Toby Gerhart (RB) – Stanford Cardinal
If Stanford could’ve kept winning, Gerhart was all but assured to be a number-two pick right behind Ingram. But winning is as important to the Heisman voters as production. In terms of the latter, Gerhart is right up there and a 136-yard game with 4 scores against California padded his resume as the nation’s most prolific rusher. The voters are going to have to weigh the success of Ingram’s team against Gerhart’s one-man-army performance this year. If it was up to me, the vote goes to Gerhart, but what the hell do I know?
If Gerhart is the reason that Charlie Weis loses yet another game and gets booted out of the hot seat in Notre Dame, then I will do everything I can to celebrate by canvassing for Gerhart to win the Heisman. It’d be a great double whammy: Notre Dame rids itself of Weis, and Stanford continues to build wins. Great stuff.
Next Game: Notre Dame vs. Stanford (-7)
4. Tim Tebow (QB) – Florida Gators
Tebow put in three touchdowns this weekend against Florida International and accounted for 317 total yards from scrimmage, but his slow year overall stat wise is killing his Heisman candidacy. He’s already won the award, and as far as production goes he’s not the biggest stat machine in the nation like he has been in year’s passed. Even if he doesn’t win, a third national title is going to cap this guy’s career off real nice.
Next Game: Florida State vs. Florida (-21)
5. C.J. Spiller (RB) – Clemson Tigers
Spiller is becoming a house-hold name in college football betting because of his overall ability to affect games. He’s not piling up massive numbers, but Clemson is in the ACC Championship game because of Spiller’s all out assault on the conference.
The all-purpose weapon has 894 rushing yards, 421 receiving yards on 29 catches and 11 touchdowns overall. You can make the case that on any big program, he’d be punishing opponents and contending for a championship. At this point, however, you can almost say the same thing about Gerhart.
Next Game: Clemson (-2.5) vs. South Carolina
6. Kellen Moore (QB) – Boise State Broncos
Boise is sitting poised at 6th and Kellen Moore is flirting with some Heisman love. Quarterbacking an undefeated team earns its merits, but it’s his numbers that are the most impressive overall. Guys like Case Keenum are posting alarming stats, but they’re not generating wins. Moore has 2,791 yards and 33 touchdowns this season…with an almost perfect 168.79 quarterback rating.
Next Game: Nevada vs. Boise State (-9.5)
7. Dion Lewis (RB) – Pittsburgh Panthers
Yep, another running-back! The piss poor quarterback class of 2009 has broken free some room for the freshman class to get some attention. Spearheading the way is stud running-back Dion Lewis, whose averaging 5.7 yards per carry and has 13 touchdowns this year on the ground with 1,291 total rushing yards. As a freshman, with so many other tailbacks on the list, Lewis probably won’t punch a ticket to NYC, but he’s certainly put the nation on notice this season.
Next Game: Pittsburgh vs. West Virginia
