NCAA Basketball Weekend Betting Recap

In their first games of the 2009-2010 NCAAB Season the Kansas Jayhawks and Michigan State Spartans both looked exceptional.

#1 ranked Kansas was a 27 ½ point favorite over Hofstra and looked every bit as good as advertised, destroying Hofstra 101 to 65. Xavier Henry had 27 points, Sherron Collins had 23 and Cole Aldrich had 11 in the Jayhawks’ demolition of the Pride.

Kansas looked strong in every single phase of the game and no doubt will be huge favorites when they face the Memphis Tigers on Tuesday night. Expect the Jayhawks to beat the Tigers, who are without their best players and last year’s coach, John Calipari, with ease.

The other top team in the Big 12, the Texas Longhorns, didn’t disappoint on Sunday. Like Kansas, Texas was a huge favorite in their 1st game of the season. UC-Irvine was a 25 point underdog against the Longhorns and played like it. Texas held UC-Irvine to 42 total points, 21 points in the first half and 21 points in the second half, on their way to an 89 to 42 beat down.

Damion Jones put up 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Dexter Pittman chipped in another 21 points. The Longhorns looked a good as Kansas did. Texas had 18 assists in the game which is exactly what Coach Rick Barnes wanted.

It’s only the first game but already the two top teams in the Big 12 are distancing themselves in the conference.

Michigan State and Purdue Roll

The two top teams in the Big Ten Conference, the #2 ranked Michigan State Spartans and the #7 Purdue Boilermakers both rolled in their first games of the season.

The Spartans, behind 21 points and 3 steals from Kalin Lucas, dominated Florida Gulf Coast 97 to 58. There was no line on the game. So, the Spartans didn’t make any BetUS NCAAB gamblers money, but they did look good in taking down the overmatched Eagles.

Purdue, as 22 point favorites, dominated CSU Northridge 89 to 64. Big Ten Player of the Year candidate Robbie Hummel had 17 points and 6 rebounds. JaJuan Johnson chipped in 15 points and Chris Kramer had 11 points and 4 assists.

North Carolina Doesn’t Look as Strong in 2009-2010

It’s only been two games and in one of the games the Tar Heels looked brilliant, but there’s no doubt that the North Carolina Tar Heels miss Ty Lawson and Tyler Hansborough.

That’s to be expected, but beating Valparaiso at home by only 11 points as 23 point favorites, like NC did on Sunday, is not the way to impress college basketball betting fans. Larry Drew II had 8 points and 6 assists, but it wasn’t the type of performance that’s going to make Georgia Tech and Duke fans quake in their gym shoes.

Drew II has to take over for the venerable Lawson and, as every college basketball fan knows, North Carolina’s success depends on how well their point guard plays. The Tar Heels are going to need Drew II to do much better than 8 and 6 if they hope to beat the senior laden Ohio State Buckeyes in their next game.

Calipari Makes His First Game as Kentucky’s Coach a Success

Coach John Calipari, who inherited a Top 5 ranked team in the Kentucky Wildcats, made his first coaching job in the Bluegrass State a successful one when the Wildcats beat the Morehead State Eagles 75 to 59.
Coach Cal got 24 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists out of Eric Bledsoe and 20 points and 12 rebounds out of Patrick Patterson. The SEC doesn’t seem that tough in college basketball odds this season. So, Coach Cal could end up pulling a Memphis type close to undefeated season with the Kentucky Wildcats in the SEC.
Outside of the SEC, Coach Cal’s management skills with his ultra talented team will be tested as the Wildcats play defending champion North Carolina and tough Connecticut back to back and then take on cross state rival Louisville.
Kentucky will be one of the more interesting teams to pay attention to this season.
The NCAAB Season isn’t even a week over yet, but already drama is starting to unfold.
