Just 75-yards away from becoming the Chiefs’ leading all-time rusher, Larry Johnson was served his release. After some homosexual-centric tweets on his Twitter account, Johnson found himself in all sorts of hot water. Going to the mattresses to try and work out the financial details about his return, KC just said “screw it” and rid themselves of a guy who has caused them all sorts of trouble with no on-field returns. Johnson will now sit on the waiver wire and not even the Cleveland Browns could be so desperate as to bring on this guy’s extra baggage.
A former first overall draft choice in 2003, Johnson matriculated from Penn State to Kansas where he notched back-to-back seasons of 1700+ yards and 37 touchdowns between 2005 and 2006. This season, however, Johnson has been a bust, logging zero touchdowns and just 358-yards on the ground.
The Chiefs, meanwhile, made waiver wire splashes of their own by snagging Chris Chambers to give Matt Cassel a reasonable target. The Chiefs were able to cover the spread against Jacksonville thanks to Chambers’ two touchdowns. On the field, Johnson won’t be missed because he was barely noticeable. Off the field, gay rights activities and furious fantasy freaks will be haunting this guy for the rest of the 2009 season.
Only one team stands out with need for running-back assistance, and that’s the New England Patriots. But LJ isn’t a Belichik kind of guy, so don’t expect any of the cellar dwellers to take a chance on dealing with a PR nightmare like Larry any time soon. Next summer, Johnson will be an unrestricted free-agent and he might find some suitors then. This guy went from busting through the hole to sinking because of his remarks about those that enjoy glory holes. Talk about falling from grace.
