Possible Movers and Shakers

As NFL Trade Deadline Approaches, NFL Fans Ask, “Will My Team Make a Splash?”

Today is the NFL trade deadline, at 3pm ET to be exact. We’re only in the 7th week of the 2009 NFL Season but its now or never to make a move.

There are a number of questions that still surround the best teams in the NFL, the Broncos, Saints, Giants and Patriots, as well as many questions surrounding the supposedly second-tier teams like the Cowboys, Eagles and Jets. A major trade probably won’t involve any of the first-tire teams, they are first-tier for a reason, but a team like the Vikings, for instance, might be ready to grab a shut-down cornerback to go along with their terrifying front-seven, or a team like the Jets…well, it appears the Jets needed much more than Braylon Edwards, whom they traded for a couple of weeks ago, after their overtime loss to the Bills this past Sunday.

Trades almost never happen on the eve of the deadline in the NFL, but you never know, right? So, let’s take a look at some trade possibilities, what teams, what players, and why, that could happen before tomorrow’s deadline.

Kansas City Looking to Trade, Dorsey, Larry Johnson, Bowe and Derrick Johnson?

The Kansas City Chiefs might be looking unload four of their most valuable, and expensive players, in defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey, running back Larry Johnson, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and linebacker Derrick Johnson, but who are the takers?

There doesn’t appear to be anyone that wants to give up a high-draft pick for Dorsey, Johnson, Bowe or Derrick Johnson. The truth, though, is I don’t believe that teams would have to part with a number one draft pick, and I believe that all four players offer value to particular teams. Nothing likely will happen, but if it does, expect the following:

Dorsey could end up in either Indianapolis, who’s defense might not be as solid as it has looked this season, Philadelphia, who needs to find a way to get more pressure on the quarterback, or the Vikings whose front seven could use more depth as evidenced by their 4th quarter meltdown against the Ravens this past Sunday.

Johnson could end up as a back-up on almost every team in the NFL save for the New Orleans Saints who go three deep at running back. Johnson gets paid too much. That’s the problem with trading him.

Bowe would be perfect across the field from Braylon Edwards in New York playing for the Jets, or across from Derrick Mason in Baltimore playing for the Ravens. Two NFC East teams, Philadelphia and the New York Giants, could use him as well.

Johnson is a dynamite linebacker that would be awesome in New England playing with Jerrod Mayo and Coach Bill Belichick hasn’t shied away from making moves already in 2009 when he sent Richard Seymour packing.

Chris Chambers Gone From San Diego?

The Chargers have no interest in resigning the free agent after this season. So, yes, he could be gone before Wednesday’s trade deadline, but to who? Denver could use him to go along with Stokeley and Marshall and QB Kyle Orten would love him, but would Chargers really do that?

Probably not, which means that they probably keep Chambers and then let him leave during the off-season. The issue with Chambers is that he is, at best, the 3rd, 4th, possibly 5th best wide receiver on most teams that would want him. That, and the fact that he will be a free agent at the end of the season, makes him virtually untradeable.
Which Raider Will Be Gone?
Probably none now that Oakland’s victory over the Philadelphia Eagles this past Sunday has kept hope alive for Al “Gollum” Davis. Davis was probably slithering around his “preciousss” team’s locker room in the dark on Sunday night.
Too bad because Davis could get his team back to respectability by unloading Kirk Morrison, Justin Fargas, Richard Seymour, Thomas Howard and the space eating JeMarcus Russell. Al, if you don’t trade Russell now, then you’ll never be able to trade him…ever. But Davis won’t do jack, so there’s no use even writing about where Morrison, Fargas, Seymour, or Howard, all excellent players in their given positions, might be going.
T.O. Out of Buffalo?
If the Bills are smart, then, yes, he’s gone, but the Bills aren’t smart. Besides, where would T.O. fit in? Baltimore possibly, but is there another team who would take a chance on him? His skills have diminished and his attitude hasn’t changed.
He’s already pissed off San Francisco, Dallas, Philadelphia and Buffalo. The man could quickly become a pariah.
Name Nobody is Mentioning - - Michael Vick
Why not? The Eagles took a shot and Coach Reid discovered, not wrongly, that it’s a lot harder to instill a player like Vick into an offensive system than he thought.
Unload the guy now because there’s no way he takes over Donovan when and if Donovan decides to retire and Kevin Kolb is better than he is anyhow. So, Vick is a no-brainer if you can trade him.
Hmm…Bowe and Dorsey to Philly for Vick, and draft picks? Did I just become a general manager?
