The Heisman race was about to get seriously interesting until Tim Tebow decided to throw himself head-first into the LSU Tigers, leading the Gators to a huge win while Tebow maintained his top spot in the race.
The Front Runners
Tim Tebow (QB) – Florida Gators
Tebow and the Gators remained first in the polls by dispatching the Tigers in prime time. Tebow was somewhat quiet for with just 11-of-16 for 134-yards, one touchdown and a pick, with just 38-yards on the ground, but it was enough to win. As long as the Gators are number one, so is Tebow.
Next Game: Arkansas vs. Florida (-24)
Colt McCoy (QB) – Texas Longhorns
McCoy’s production has slipped from his surgical outputs of past seasons. With 10 touchdowns and 6 picks, his numbers are suffering along with his Heisman chances. But McCoy has a chance to thrust himself back in to prominence with a big win over Oklahoma. But the Sooners would love nothing more than to spoil the party for Texas this weekend.
Next Game: Oklahoma vs. Texas (-3)
Jimmy Clausen (QB) – Notre Dame Fighting Irish
With Tebow and McCoy dipping in production, Clausen hasn’t missed a beat. He leads the entire nation in efficiency and has thrown for more than 300-yards/game despite a stiff schedule. The fledgling hope in Notre Dame has thrown for 1,544 yards and 12 touchdowns, with just two picks. He can punch his ticket to New York with another big game this weekend against USC.
Next Game: USC (-11) vs. Notre Dame
The Outside Shots
Case Keenum (QB) – Houston Cougars
Nobody is doing more against soft opponents than Keenum, who leads the nation with 2,130 passing yards and 17 touchdowns. He’s on pace for Brees-like numbers, and if he finishes with more than 5,000 yards and 40 scores, he’ll be in New York as the outside shot.
Next Game: Houston (-20.5) vs. Tulane
Ryan Williams (RB) – Virginia Tech Hokies
Williams has two things going against him in the Heisman race: he’s a freshman and a running-back. But with 754-yards, 9 touchdowns and 143 receiving yards, he’s become the premier back in the country now that Jahvid Best’s time in the spotlight is up. He’s certainly been more consistent than Noel Devine in West Virginia, and continues to be the little engine that can at just 5-foot-9 and 205 pounds.
Next Game: Virginia Tech (-3) vs. Georgia Tech
Tony Pike (QB) – Cincinnati Bearcats
Pike is becoming the biggest sensation to come out of the University of Cincinnati since Kenyon Martin. With a big 270-yard, two touchdown effort against Miami (Ohio), Pike’s right on the cusp of being a Heisman candidate, but a soft schedule and a 500-yard deficit to Keenum put on the brink.
Next Game: Cincinnati (-2) vs. South Florida
Gone But Not Forgotten
Todd Reesing (QB) – Kansas Jayhawks
Reesing reminded everyone of his name with a 442-yard, four touchdown performance against Iowa State. With admirable numbers, he’s getting noticed, but he’s certainly got a lot of work ahead of him. A tough schedule is not going to make things easier for him.
Next Game: Kansas (-9.5) vs. Colorado
