The Red River Shootout is grabbing headlines this weekend, but there is a ton of college football betting action outside of the Big 12 showdown...
USC Trojans at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (+10)
Another one of college football's classic rivalries is playing second fiddle on the weekend slate. The Trojans are coming off a bye following their statement win over the Cal Golden Bears. Southern Cal has had trouble getting its offense rolling behind freshman quarterback Matt Barkley, ranking just fifth in the Pac-10 with an average 28.8 points per game. Luckily the defense is among the best in the country, giving up just over 238 yards per game.
This could be the biggest game of the season for Notre Dame, which would be thrown into the top BCS contenders if they could knock off the Trojans. Head coach Charlie Weis' future in South Bend could depend on the outcome of this meeting. The Irish’s offense is their biggest weapon in this game with quarterback Jimmie Clausen leading a potent air attack that ranks eighth in the nation and has 13 passing touchdowns and just three interceptions.
South Carolina Gamecocks at Alabama Crimson Tide (-17)
Alabama continues to march towards a BCS bid. The Crimson Tide took a 22-3 win over the Mississippi Rebels, flexing their defensive muscles. Alabama ranks second in total defense behind their SEC rivals Florida, and have given up just over 12 points per game this season. ‘Bama gets linebacker Jerrell Harris back from suspension this weekend. The sophomore has been touted as an impact maker and should help make up for the loss of Dont'a Hightower. The Tide's offense has found its stride behind first-year starter Greg McElroy, scoring 37 points per game.
South Carolina is riding four straight wins, including a 28-26 nail biter against the Kentucky Wildcats last weekend. Quarterback Stephen Garcia had a breakout performance with 233 yards passing, three touchdown connections, and a one-yard run in the fourth quarter for a score that gave the team the win. The Gamecocks are averaging almost 218 yards passing per game while getting just over 152 yards rushing from running back tandem Kenny Miles and Jarvis Giles.
Virginia Tech Hokies at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (+3)
The Hokies are in title talks after an impressive win over Boston College last Saturday. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor continues to mature under center. He's shown he's not just a rushing quarterback by passing for almost 166 yards per game, including some thrilling touchdown passes against the Eagles. Virginia Tech is second in the ACC in rushing yards behind the legs of Taylor and running back Ryan Williams, who totaled 159 yards and a score on the ground last weekend.
No team hits the ground running like the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech ranks fourth in the country in rushing yards with 277 yards per game. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt has passed for only four touchdowns and an average of 147 yards but has scrambled for six scores and almost 84 yards on the ground per game. Running back Jonathan Dwyer has found pay dirt five times this season and leads the team with 85 yards rushing per game. Last weekend, in a lightning-delayed win over Florida State, the junior RB totaled 102 yards and two scores.
