The Minnesota Twins have a knack for really getting it going when they need it, towards the end of a regular season. By doing so, they throw everything out of whack for not only the American League, in terms of which teams are going to the MLB Playoffs, but also for baseball betting fans who want to be able to plan on their playoff and possible World Series betting at this time of the MLB Season.
The Twins are only 2 ½ games out of first place in the A.L. Central Division. Even though they are making me look like a fortune teller (I picked the Twins to win the A.L. Central if my memory service correctly), they’re screwing with my playoff betting plan. Come on Twins! Either get in or get out!
The truth is that Minnesota has a chance this weekend to overtake the Detroit Tigers. The Twins play the Kansas City Royals. The Detroit Tigers play the Chicago White Sox on the road. The White Sox would like nothing more than to stick it to Detroit and will pull out all of the stops to do that. The Twins? They should coast past K.C. and possibly, put themselves into first place.
Colorado Looks to Pull Away (Finally!) From the Giants
The Colorado Rockies will be looking to pull away from the San Francisco Giants for the wildcard spot in the N.L. once and for all when they step onto the diamond to take on the St. Louis Cardinals. The Giants still have hope, although brief hope, that they can catch Colorado when they step onto the diamond to take on the Chicago Cubs.
Colorado is facing St. Louis at the right time, when St. Louis is possibly thinking about how they will do in the playoffs, and have a shot to beat the Cardinals at Coors Field. The Giants? Their chances are worse against the Cubs because Chicago will want to end this season on a high note. Taking down San Francisco would be a good way to start the 2009 swan song.
More importantly, does it even matter? From a betting perspective, the weekend series between the G-Men and the Cubbies and the Rockies and the Cards could lead to victories, but it won’t lead to a team doing much in the playoffs. Then again, the Rockies made it all the way to the World Series a couple of years ago after sneaking into the playoffs.
Dodgers Get a Reprieve
The Dodgers stepped it up against the San Francisco Giants last weekend and now get a reprieve this weekend when they face the Pittsburgh Pirates. L.A. is on an upswing and will try to carry that over to the playoffs where their starting rotation no doubt is less than what Philadelphia and St. Louis will bring to the table. The Dodgers looked terrific last weekend when beating Tim Lincecum and no doubt are felling good about themselves.
L.A. can play down to their opponents, however, so they had better keep on their toes against the Pirates.
