The dog days of summer are almost over, but there are still plenty of chances to cash winning ‘under’ tickets in the majors. Check out this week’s list of the best ‘under’ teams in baseball over the L/5 days…
(Rank) (Team) (O/U Record) (O/U Record in L/5)
1: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (76-61-6) (0-5 in L/5) This week, the Angels make a rare appearance on the Who’s Hot ‘Under’ list. They still own the best mark for ‘over’ bettors in baseball at 15-games over .500. For a team that has had a questionable pitching staff all season, manager Mike Scoscia has to be thrilled that his squad hasn’t played one ‘over’ game this month! Since August 26 th, the Halos have held their opponents to just 2.74 runs per game. They’ve given up three runs or fewer in 14 of those 19 games. LHP Scott Kazmir has been fantastic since coming over to Anaheim from Tampa Bay. Even though he’s 0-1, the Halos are 2-1 in his three starts and he has a stellar 1.86 ERA. That’s all the good news. The bad news? The team has only scored 4.26 runs per game in that stretch, and it has been held to three runs or fewer in 13 of the 19. Both the offense and pitching are going to have to come together if Anaheim is besting the Yankees and Red Sox in the AL.
2: Chicago White Sox (54-87-3) (1-4 in L/5) With the Tigers struggling, the White Sox are doing just enough to stick around in the AL Central pennant chase. The pitching staff has carried the way over the L/12 games, holding nine of those 12 opponents to three runs or fewer. Much like the Angels though, the offense has had its share of struggles, plating four runs or fewer in eight of the 12. Still, if the Palehose can play .667 baseball like they have over their L/12 games for the rest of the season, there’s going to be a lot of pressure on Detroit to string some wins together; there’s still six games with the Tigers on the ’09 slate.
3: Philadelphia Phillies (59-77-6) (1-4 in L/5) Philadelphia’s pitchers have combined to throw 18 straight shutout innings. Winning six of its L/8 games has effectively put the clamps on the Braves and Marlins and wrapped up another NL East crown. The Phillies have their eye on a bigger prize, though. They’re just a game behind the Dodgers for the best record in the National League, and though it probably won’t make a difference as to who their first-round opponent is in the playoffs, if it comes down to a Game 7 in the NLCS against Los Angeles, the Phillies would prefer the game being played in the City of Brotherly Love. The Cards are still right behind them though, and if they end up finishing behind St. Louis, the Phillies will have to start the playoffs in Los Angeles as opposed to hosting either the Rockies or Giants.
And the rest…
4: Arizona Diamondbacks (65-72-8) (1-4 in L/5)
5: New York Mets (64-72-8) (1-4 in L/5)
