As the month of September continues, the baseball betting action heats up for the march towards the playoffs. Find out which teams are rounding into form as potential playoff teams with BetUS Sportsbook’s list of teams that are on fire…
(Rank) (Team) (SU Record, $$$) (SU Record in L/5, $$$)
1: Atlanta Braves (76-68, -$405) (5-0, +$570 in L/5) The Braves have very quietly snuck their way back into what could be turning into a wacky race for the NL Wild Card. Making up four games in the loss column with just 18 games to go isn’t totally impossible, especially if the squad keeps going like they are. A shocking three-game sweep in St. Louis was the catalyst for this recent five-game run, and with this remaining schedule, anything is possible. Twelve of their L/18 games are at home, and the road contests are against the woeful Mets and Nationals. Over its L/7 games, Atlanta has thrown two shutouts and has allowed two runs or fewer five times.
It’s yet another testament to a starting pitching staff that has simply been fantastic this year. If the offense was even just mediocre, SPs Jair Jurrjens, Javier Vazquez, Derek Lowe, and Tommy Hanson would have a lot more than 48 combined wins. Still, knowing that those four guys are going to combine for at least 50 wins this year is an impressive feat.
2: Oakland Athletics (66-78, +$136) (4-1, +$545 in L/5) Oakland isn’t talking about the playoffs any time in the near future, but it’s playing solid baseball now. Through seven games of this eight-game roadie, the Athletics may have effectively crippled the seasons of the Twins and Rangers. They took two out of three in the Baggie Dome, and have won the first two in Arlington in resounding fashion. The A’s have outscored Texas 15-1 over the L/2 nights, and a similar result tonight could prove to be fatal if it the Rangers haven’t already been given last rights in 2009.
3: Boston Red Sox (85-58, +$1,430) (5-0, +$518 in L/5) The reason that the Rangers are set to be written off is just how well the Red Sox have played lately. It doesn’t really matter that the Sox are still five games behind the Yanks in the loss column with just 19 games to play, because this most recent six-game winning streak has opened up a 5.5-game cushion on the Rangers for the AL Wild Card. In those six games, Boston has held its foes to a grand total of eight runs, including five games of allowing either one or zero runs.
RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka threw six shutout frames, and LHP Billy Wagner lowered his ERA to 1.42 with a scoreless two-thirds of an inning in the eighth, both of which are really bad signs for potential playoff foes. No one is going to stop Red Sox nation from another World Series if the boys from Beantown continue to pitch this well. There are just simply too many weapons for manager Terry Francona to choose from.
And the rest…
4: Baltimore Orioles (59-85, -$1,354) (3-2, +$491 in L/5)
5: Kansas City Royals (58-86, -$1,912) (4-1, +$405 in L/5)
