The 2009 college football betting season for Big East bettors got off to a fine start in Week 1. Find out how the teams stack up for sports betting fanatics with this week’s power poll!
1: Cincinnati Bearcats (1-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) Was there a more impressive team in Week 1 of the college football betting season than Cincinnati? The Bearcats kicked off their defense of the Big East title by blowing the doors off the Scarlet Knights in Piscataway. The 47-15 victory not only sent a big message to the rest of the conference, but to the entire nation as well. The Bearcats don’t appear to have lost a step coming into ’09.
Up Next: Home vs. Southeast Missouri State
2: Connecticut Huskies (1-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) In spite of the fact that the Huskies turned the ball over four times and conceded the final nine points of their game against Ohio, they still turned out a 23-16 victory to kick the year off with a win for their sports bettors. Both RBs Jordan Todman and Andre Dixon combined to run the ball 43 times for 267 yards and a touchdown. The duo will need to keep playing well to make up for what Donald Brown III can no longer bring to the team now that he has graduated.
Up Next: Home vs. North Carolina
3: Pittsburgh Panthers (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) Unlike some of the other big name programs in college football in Week 1, the Panthers slaughtered their FCS foe, Youngstown State with authority. They held the Penguins to 159 yards of total offense. RB Dion Lewis, who is one of the backs trying to pick up the slack from the departed LeSean McCoy, rushed the ball 20 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
Up Next: Away @ Buffalo
4: Syracuse Orange (1-0 ATS, 0-1 SU) The Greg Paulus experiment at Syracuse nearly started off with a tremendous outright upset. Paulus went 19/31 for 167 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, but in the end, Minnesota’s 35-yard field goal in overtime iced a 23-20 victory at the Carrier Dome. Still, considering how many players have left the program recently, ‘Cuse bettors will be thrilled that they stuck within the touchdown set by the oddsmakers.
Up Next: Away @ Penn State
5: South Florida Bulls (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) South Florida cruised past Wofford by scoring the game’s final 33 points. QB Matt Grothe was incredibly efficient, completing 19 of his 23 passes, but he only threw for 155 yards and a touchdown. The offense will need to be sharper if this team is going to succeed in the rough and tumble Big East this season.
Up Next: Away @ Western Kentucky
6: West Virginia Mountaineers (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU) If West Virginia’s defense plans on giving up 20 points to teams like Liberty on a regular basis imagine what the good teams in the Big East can do to it! In spite of the fact that RB Noel Devine rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown, the Mountaineers never really comfortably put away their FCS foe, but they hung on to record a 33-20 victory. QB Jarrett Brown made a great impression on the Morgantown faithful in Week 1, throwing for 243 yards and rushing for 69 more in the victory.
Up Next: Home vs. East Carolina
And the rest…
7: Louisville Cardinals (0-0 ATS, 1-0 SU)
8: Rutgers Scarlet Knights (0-1 ATS, 0-1 SU)
