With teams beginning to jockey for position in the divisional races across baseball, there’s going to be a premium put on red hot pitchers. Check out BetUS Sportsbook’s list of pitchers that you should be backing as the summer heats up for sports betting fanatics…
Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (4-0 in September 2008) Around this time last season, Wainwright really started to kick it into gear. He went 4-0 with a 3.81 ERA in five starts with the Cardinals. With a repeat performance this September, Wainwright will win 20 games for the first time in his young career. His 16 wins so far this season are already a career-high, and his 2.47 ERA is easily a career-best as well. No one may be talking about the right-hander for the Cy Young Award, but it’s going to be hard to overlook a guy who may ultimately end up with an ERA around 2.50 and 20 wins on the season. It’s also going to help that he has been a huge help to St. Louis’ efforts towards the NL Central pennant.
Roy Oswalt, Houston Astros (5-1 in September 2008) The Astros have totally fallen off the face of the earth and Oswalt may be having his worst season as a pro, but perhaps a strong month of September will be the boost that the right-hander needs heading into the 2010 year. The righty’s L/3 starts have been incredibly encouraging, as he is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA. The month of September has been the best month of Oswalt’s career. He is a stunning 26-8 in 42 starts in September with a career-best 2.50 ERA.
Randy Wolf, Los Angeles Dodgers (4-1 in September 2008) Wolf has pitched out of his skull lately. Before leading LA to a 5-3 loss to the Diamondback on the final day of August, he had gone 4-0 and led the Dodgers to a perfect 5-0 mark in his L/5 outings. He hasn’t allowed more than four earned runs since June 24th. Even though the southpaw is only 9-6 on the season, he is arguably having the best year of his career. If he lowers his 3.25 ERA by just a tad, he’ll have the best ERA of his career, and he’s never had a better WHIP than the 1.11 of the ’09 season. Add that to the fact that he’s playing on arguably the best team in the National League, and the makings are there for another September like he had in ’08 when he went 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA.
Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals (4-1 in September 2008) Poor Zack Greinke seemingly needs to be perfect to pick up a win nowadays. He’s got the second best ERA in the American League this season at 2.32, and he’s also got over 200 strikeouts. His 1.08 WHIP and .233 opposing batting average are insane numbers, and he has only allowed 40 walks and 11 home runs in 27 starts. With those numbers, he should easily be on pace to win 20 games, right? Maybe that would hold true on any respectable team in baseball, but these are the Royals that we’re talking about. In spite of the fact that he is just 13-8 this year, Greinke went 4-1 in last September, and it’s hard to see how he’s losing any time in the near future, especially if he’s pitching as well as he did against Seattle in his last start (complete-game one-hitter).
