Every week in the 2009 MLB Season gets us closer to crowning this year’s World Series. This week in particular looks to be an important one for the National League as two teams with great pitching rotations face each other in a preview of what could happen come playoff time.
The San Francisco Giants really stepped it up last week when sweeping their N.L. West rivals for the N.L. Wildcard, the Colorado Rockies. The G-Men used, what else, great pitching to stop the Rockies dead in their tracks. It could turn out to be a defining move as the Giants are now in the driver’s seat for the N.L. Wildcard.
Of course, the only way it will be defining is if the G-Men continue their great play against the team that is quickly becoming the solid favorite in the N.L. to make it to the World Series, the Philadelphia Phillies. The 2008 World Series’ champs have been stunningly good since acquiring Cliff Lee from the Cleveland Indians.
Then again, the most impressive team in MLB right now is the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals, even with Albert Pujols’s numbers down after the all-star break, have been tearing up on the diamond. They are 8 and 2 in their last 10 games, are now 10 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs in the N.L. Central, and should stomp all over the Milwaukee Brewers and Atlanta Braves this week.
In the A.L. it is quickly becoming apparent that the team to beat this fall will be the New York Yankees. The Yankees are riding a 3 game winning streak, have won 7 out of their last 10, and are now 6 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the N.L. East. The Bronx Bombers take on the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays this week.
Their top rivals, the Boston Red Sox, find themselves in a tussle for the A.L. Wildcard with the Texas Rangers. The BoSox appear to have righted the ship that went south a week ago when the Yankees were pummeling them. Boston takes on the Rays and White Sox this week while the Rangers take on the Toronto and Baltimore.
The Rangers might be playing for the A.L. Wildcard but Texas fans shouldn’t give up hope that their beloved Rangers can catch the L.A. Angels in the A.L. West. The Rangers are only 5 games out and sweeps against both Baltimore and Toronto could put them into the A.L. West discussion as the Angels take on the Seattle Mariners, who can really bite a team at times, and the Kansas City Royals. If the Angels falter, the Rangers should be right there.
With each passing week, we’re marching closer to the 2009 MLB wagering post-season!
