1: St. Louis Cardinals (38-24, +$531) (5-0, +$500 in L/5) Stick another divisional championship up in the rafters of Busch Stadium. Barring a monumental collapse, the Cards should have the NL Central wrapped up with over a month left in the season. St. Louis should have its eye on a bigger prize this season, though. It has the ability to score the best record in the National League, thus assuring home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Cardinals have won six straight at home dating back to August 12th, and in that stretch, they have only allowed more than two runs twice. Really, it’s hard to find any fault in the way that they’ve been playing since July 27th, regardless of whether it’s at home or away. The Cards are a remarkable 21-6 in their L/27, which has opened up their comfortable lead in the NL Central.

2: Seattle Mariners (35-27, +$484) (4-1, +$366 in L/5) The Mariners really got no respect at all in a three-game home set against the Athletics, as the oddsmakers lined them at -116, -103, and -107 against a clearly inferior club. A three game sweep opened some eyes though, and it at least gave the M’s a ray of hope towards running down the Rangers, Red Sox, and Rays for the AL Wild Card. Anything less than six out of seven at home against the Royals and Angels over the next seven days probably won’t be good enough in all reality, especially with how well all three Wild Card contenders are playing. Still, it’s nice to see that Seattle hasn’t given up on the season in spite of the fact that it dealt its top left-hander right at the trade deadline.

3: Boston Red Sox (42-20, +$1,110) (4-1, +$307 in L/5) The Red Sox may have dropped two out of three to the Yankees, but they’ve kept the pressure on both the Rays and the Rangers in the AL Wild Card chase by taking the first three games of a four-game set against the Chi Sox. Even though they only scored three runs in Wednesday night’s 3-2 victory, they’re absolutely mashing the ball at Fenway since July 27th. In that stretch, they’ve scored at least six runs in 11 of their 15 games, and they’ve averaged a stunning 6.73 runs per game. That’s not bad considering that there was a shutout in that bunch as well. Though there are still four more games on this home stand before hitting the road, the defining run of this season will come right at the outset of the month of September. Boston will square off with the Rays six times, the White Sox four times, and the Angels three times with its playoff hopes on the line.
