Ryan Moore beat Kevin Stadler and Jason Bohn in a playoff to take home the Wyndham Championship trophy this past Sunday, but the key player that everybody was watching was Sergio Garcia.
Garcia had a three shot lead going into the round and found a way to lose not just the lead but also the tournament by the 12th hole. It was another meltdown by the Spaniard who has had memorable meltdowns recently.
Of course, Sergio’s play doesn’t mean all that much. Neither, really, does the play of Moore, Stadler and Bohn. All four golfers may have had their shot in the sun this past week, but don’t expect to see any of the four close to the leaders the next four weeks as the PGA Tour is at FedEx Cup point season.
The FedEx Cup has only been around since 2007 but already it has become one of the focal points for golfers during the PGA Tour Season. With a bonus of 10 million up for grabs, the FedEx Cup, without a doubt, is one of the key events for players on the PGA Tour.
Key enough for Tiger Woods to play in it. Woods, who won the inaugural FedEx Cup in 2007, has said that he will play this week in the first FedEx Cup tournament, The Barclays. Speculation abounds that El Tigre will not only play in The Barclays, but he will also play in the other three tournaments that make up the FedEx Cup playoffs: the Deutsche Bank Championship, the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship.
The way it works is that the points are reset before The Barclays. The top 125 leaders in the FedEx Cup point standings play in The Barclays. After the Barclays, the top 100 leaders in the FedEx Cup point standings play in the Deutsche Bank Championship. After the Deutsche Bank Championship, the field is cut to 70 and then to 30 for the Tour Championship.
The player with the most points after the four-tournament playoff is the winner of the FedEx Cup and a 10 million dollar bonus. Of course, more is at stake than just he bonus. Besides exemptions and retirement funds, the purse of each FedEx Cup Playoff tournament is $7,500,000 which easily makes it the richest four weeks on the PGA Tour.
Can Woods take home is 2nd FedEx Cup in the past three years? The question is an emphatic yes as Tiger has been brilliant lately and has a huge lead in the FedEx Cup point standings.
Last year with Tiger on the bench due to a knee injury, Vijay Singh won two of the FedEx Cup events and Camilo Villegas won two. Singh ended up taking home the FedEx Cup trophy because of his terrific play in the two events where Villegas won, but things will be different for both golfers this year.
This year, all golfers know that to take home the trophy they must first go through Tiger Woods. Will someone step up to the challenge ala Y.E. Yang in the PGA Championship? Or, will Tiger roll to another FedEx Cup Championship.
Stay tuned to find out!
