Whereas the picture is getting rosier for the hot squads in the bigs, there are plenty of teams in baseball that are singing the blues. Check out the Sportsbook’s list of which teams are down in the dumps of late that you should stay away from at all costs if recent form is any indicator…
(Rank) (Team) (SU Record, $$$) (SU Record in L/5, $$$)
1: San Francisco Giants (61-52, +$800) (1-4, -$585 in L/5) The Giants had a golden opportunity to close the gap significantly on the Dodgers in the NL West chase this week, but so far, they’ve squandered that chance. They were beaten soundly in the first two games of this critical three-game set by a combined score of 13-3. Between those two losses and losses at home to the Reds at -175 and an inexcusable -310, San Francisco bettors are reeling. The offense hasn’t produced over these L/5 days, scoring a total of 14 runs. SPs Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain can only carry this team so far, and it seems as though Cain, who has lost his L/2 starts, is starting to fall off from his 12-2 start to the season.
2: Minnesota Twins (54-58, -$932) (1-4, -$396 in L/5) Dropping two out of three games in Cleveland may have been the beginning of the end for the Twins this season. They followed that up by losing two out of three in Detroit, and they kicked off this three-game set at home with the Royals by getting pummeled 14-6 as -213 favorites. Not only are the Tigers playing better baseball, but the White Sox are as well. Add that to the fact that the South Siders have added OF Alex Rios to their lineup and may be adding SP Jake Peavy to the mix by the beginning of next month, and it just seems impossible for Minnesota to be able to claw its way back into this mix. Better pitching efforts are going to be required, as over the L/10 games, the Twinkies have given up a stunning average of 7.80 runs per game.
3: Tampa Bay Rays (61-52, -$75) (1-4, -$382 in L/5) Baseball bettors should’ve seen this lull for the Rays coming. They closed out a huge stretch of games at Tropicana Field by beating the Red Sox in both games of a critical two-game set. Both games were very emotionally charged, and it’s become increasingly apparent that they just weren’t ready for this six-game West Coast swing. The Mariners took two out of three in their visit to Seattle, and the Halos have already taken the first two between these teams in Anaheim. The good news is that today is the last day of this road trip. The Rays have a ton of home games coming up on the schedule, and for a team that’s 36-18 in front of the hometown faithful, that’s a great thing. Tampa Bay just has to hope it can stick within shouting distance of the BoSox and Rangers in order to make one final push towards the playoffs.
And the rest…
4: Chicago Cubs (58-53, -$551) (1-4, -$312 in L/5)
5: New York Mets (52-61, -$888) (1-4, -$300 in L/5)
