George St. Pierre
Age: 28
Record: 18-2
Before UFC 100
Off a dominating performance over B.J. Penn – and to some, a controversial one – George St-Pierre takes his five-fight winning streak to UFC 100. At this point in his career, GSP is in his prime and is one of the most popular MMA fighter around. In 2008, he knocked out Matt Serra and topped Jon Fitch, which earned him Canadian Athlete of the Year honors, and in March 2009, shortly after his win over Penn, he became the first MMA fighter to earn a Gatorade sponsorship.
GSP is current the champion in the Welterweight division.
Fight With Thiago Alves At UFC 100
The pit bull, Thiago Alves is the next in line to get a shot at GSP but the odds makers aren’t giving him a great chance to win on the betting line.
Alves isn’t a scrub though as he enters UFC 100 on a seven-fight winning streak and of all the fighters St. Pierre has fought recently, Alves does have the power to push him around.
This will be an even fight as Alves doesn’t mind trading on his feet but St. Pierre does have an edge on the ground with his wrestling. Don’t underestimate the pressure Alves might be facing as well as he hasn’t fought in a fight of this magnitude.
After UFC 100
The welterweight division in the UFC isn’t as stacked as the welterweight division in boxing. If St. Pierre does win as expected, there isn’t a ton of enticing matchups that present themselves immediately.
The fight everyone would want to see if St. Pierre wins is a matchup against Anderson Silva. Both Silva and GSP are considered two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the UFC and without a doubt, that would be one of the most hyped and watched fights in UFC history.
