After Mine That Bird’s spectacular upset win in the Kentucky Derby will horse betting junkies be in for another payday this weekend with the second jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico?
Nobody saw Mine That Bird coming in the Derby, where he shocked the crowd as a 50/1 underdog. He won’t sneak up on anyone this time, but if he does head to the winner’s circle he will once again do it as the underdog. Even after wining the Derby there was no way that Mine That Bird was going to go from 50/1 in Kentucky to the overall favorite at Pimlico. On the latest horse racing odds Mine That Bird checks in second as a +375 underdog.
The favorite is the lone filly in the field, Rachel Alexandra, who made waves after a dominating win in the Kentucky Oaks a day before the Derby. In the Oaks, Rachel Alexandra destroyed the rest of the field, winning by 20¼ lengths, which has bolted her up the horse racing odds to even money in the Preakness. Her win in the Oaks isn’t the only thing that has people talking about Rachel Alexandra; her jockey has also been the talk of the race. Calvin Borel, who pushed Mine That Bird to the win in the Derby, will be switching saddles in the Preakness and will be honoring his contract to ride Rachel Alexandra for the season. Borel, who’s also famous for riding Street Sense to a win in the 2007 Derby, could end up being the intangible that allows Rachel Alexandra to become the first filly to win the Preakness since Nellie Morse in 1924. With Borel riding Rachel Alexandra, Mine That Bird’s new jockey will be Mike Smith, who rode Giacomo to a Derby win back in 2005.
If Mine That Bird or Rachel Alexandra fails to get it done at Pimlico, look for Pioneerof the Nile to step up and steal the race. He follows Mine That Bird and Rachel Alexandra on the horse racing odds at +500 after placing second in the Derby. Before the Derby, Pioneerof the Nile had gone undefeated in 2009 with three wins at Santa Anita Park earlier in the year.
