It’s your last chance to get your sports betting action in on the NCAA Basketball Tournament! Today, BetUS looks at some of the betting trends for you to keep an eye on before you place your bets this weekend.
Twelve Troubles
The #12 Arizona Wildcats are the only double-digit seed left in the dance. They’ll be battling a whole mess of history going against them, as a #12 has only advanced into the regional finals once in the history of the tournament (Missouri Tigers of 2002). #12s are not only winless since 2002 at this level, they’re also winless ATS since ’05 (0-4 ATS). History will also tell you that it may not behoove Wildcats bettors to bother taking the points. From the Sweet 16 on in the NCAA Tournament, double digit seeds are just 1-6 ATS in the game which they get eliminated from the dance.
#1 Fun
Arizona bettors aren’t going to want to see this stat either… In the history of the NCAA Tournament, #1 seeds are 56-14 SU in the Sweet 16. In fact, they’re also a perfect 14-0 against double-digit seeds at this stage of the tournament. In last year’s tournament, the #1s went a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS, and averaged winning their games by a whopping 16.0 points per game. They weren’t much worse in the Elite 8, as they went 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS. The only loser of the bunch for sports bettors was Kansas, which only beat Davidson 59-57.
The ACC’s Elite
So far, it’s been a miserable tournament for ACC bettors. Florida State, Wake Forest, and Boston College were all higher seeds in their first round battles, but all got bounced without a victory. Though #10 Maryland advanced, it got pummeled by #2 Memphis in the second round. Only North Carolina and Duke remain. Overall, the ACC is just 4-5 SU and ATS, but here’s a tidbit to chew on. The ACC has gone a whopping 8-1 SU in Sweet 16 games since 2000. The only loser was Duke, which lost to LSU in 2006.
Big Ten Roadblock
Michigan State and Purdue are the only two teams from the Big Ten that are still standing in this tournament. Though the Big Ten schools are 12-7 SU in the Sweet 16 since 2000, this round has been a nightmare of late for the Spartans. HC Tom Izzo’s bunch has gotten knocked out of the L/2 NCAA Tournaments at this juncture, and with the stingy defending champions on deck, could be looking at another premature exit from the dance.
End of the East?
A whopping five schools from the Big East are amongst the last sixteen teams standing in the tournament. Among them include three #1 seeds (Pittsburgh, Louisville, and Connecticut), and two #3 seeds (Villanova and Syracuse). Since 2000, the Big East schools are just 10-16 SU in the Sweet 16. If that trend were to continue though, it would be incredibly alarming, since three of the five teams left are big favorites.
