We're set to make our college basketball picks for who would be sitting as a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament if it were to start today!
#1: New Mexico Lobos (17-8-2 ATS, 25-3 SU) - New Mexico's case to stay on the #2 line in the West Bracket became a lot stronger this week with wins against Wyoming and Air Force. Lobos bettors would've felt a lot better with a more convincing victory over the Falcons, but a win is a win at this point in the season. This is a make-or-break week for HC Steve Alford's club. The winner of that game in Provo is going to have a huge leg up in the MWC Tournament. Right now though, with 11 straight wins under their belts, it's hard to make a college basketball pick against the Lobos.
Up Next: Away @ Colorado State, Away @ BYU
#2: Duke Blue Devils (16-8-2 ATS, 23-4 SU) - It's not often that you see a team push the spread in back-to-back games, but that's exactly what the Dookies did. Coach K's club has an interesting argument to be a top seed in the tourney right now over Purdue, as it only has two losses in conference play (@ NC State, @ Georgia Tech), and other losses at Wisconsin and Georgetown aren't anything to be ashamed of. Blowout wins over Charlotte, Arizona State, Connecticut, and Gonzaga don't look as strong now as they did before, and though the ACC has more tourney teams than the Big Ten does, the quality of play out there may be just a tad better than what Duke is facing on a regular basis. For that reason, we'll keep the Blue Devils as the #2 seed in the South bracket.
Up Next: Home vs. Tulsa, Away @ Virginia
#3: Villanova Wildcats (16-9 ATS, 22-4 SU) - The Wildcats were beaten twice this week, and that will take them off of the #1 line and may drop them even further really soon. Dropping to Connecticut and U-Pitt will certainly hurt, but HC Jay Wright's club will absolutely have to get back on the horse in a hurry. These last few games in the regular season are going to be very difficult, but this is still a club that can finish anywhere from a #1 seed to a #4 or so if things go particularly badly. For now though, we'll keep Nova as the #2 seed in the East.
Up Next: Home vs. South Florida, Away @ Syracuse
#4: West Virginia Mountaineers (11-14 ATS, 21-5 SU) - WVU boots Georgetown off of the #2 line this week after notching wins at Providence and at home against Seton Hall. The battle between these two will be decided in a couple of weeks, but before then, the Mountaineers will have the opportunity to put a pair of bubble dwellers out of their misery. Depending on how games against the Bearcats and Huskies go, we may be discussing West Virginia as a team to stick on the #1 line come March Madness. In all likelihood, if this was the setup of the bracket, the 'Neers would have a tough time making an argument to do anything but head to the Midwest.
Up Next: Away @ Connecticut, Home vs. Cincinnati
