The Colts arrived to the Super Bowl 44 the only way they knew how, and that was passing the ball effectively. When you consider they have arguably the best passer in the league you understand why the Indianapolis Colts odds to win the Super Bowl are what they are.
Peyton Manning is the reason why the Colts are where they are, make no mistake about it. The son of New Orleans Saints QB Archie Manning has been one of the best QBs in the league.
Super Bowl Odds:
New Orleans Saints +5.5
Indianapolis Colts -5.5
O/U 56.5
Let’s see how Indy arrived at their fourth Super Bowl:
The Colts started their season at training camp with some usual faces missing, Marvin Harrison and former head coach Tony Dungy, both out of the organization for different reasons.
It was time for Jim Caldwell to prove he was worthy of a Head Coach position and despite that the guy has done things pretty well I won’t say he is a genius just because the Colts are at the Super Bowl in his first year of coaching; you have to realize he got the keys to a Cadillac and Peyton Manning is the driver.
Not many people remember this, but at the beginning of the season Reggie Wayne was the number one receiver and Anthony Gonzalez was number two, but the former buckeye receiver injured his knee at the first quarter in the season opener 14-12 win against the Jaguars and never came back.
With no Harrison and no Gonzalez for Manning the Colts didn’t seem much of a contender but they proved many people wrong.
Even though they were outplayed by the Dolphins they managed to beat them 27-23 in week 2 even when they loss the time of possession battle 14:53 against 45:07; and then a week later they hammered the Cardinals in Arizona 31-10; Manning proved in both games his team was not flying under the radar any more.
An weak schedule against the Titans, Rams and 49ers plus a bye week was enough time for Manning to get Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie in tune with the rest of the team, making them a threat any given play.
In the following three games the Colts beat their opponents just by three points or less, including a late comeback 35-34 win against their nemesis the New England Patriots in what could be one of the greatest games in regular season history.
In week 13 Indy was standing with a 12-0 record and with their division pretty much wrapped up the undefeated season bells started to ring much louder. A 16-0 season just two years after the Patriots did it started to sound pretty good for the Colts fans, especially since nobody could figure them out, at least not within the 60 minutes of football.
However, Jim Caldwell had something else in mind and he decided to pull their starters out in the game against the Jets and that ended the Colts perfect season. But if you think about it, that decision made the Colts healthier and more of a favorite in the big game. The Indianapolis Colts odds to win the Super Bowl are -5 right now and that’s due to a combination of coaching, talent and Peyton Manning.
The playoffs games weren’t a big deal for the Colts this year; they outplayed both the Ravens and the Jets by frequently throwing the ball. They just simply forgot about their running game and about balance concerning their offensive strategy, something much similar to the Patriots from 07, “if you want to try to stop me go ahead, otherwise I will run you over”, and they did.
Another thing for the pro NFL betting fans to keep an eye on is that with the win over the Jets the Colts are the best team against the spread in the NFL. With the spread covered in two playoff games, they’re 10-5-1 so far this year.
