Hell has frozen over; the Saints are going to the Super Bowl!!! That saying might be more fitting years ago but not now, they were the best team in the NFC all year and in most parts of the season the best team in the NFL.
Super Bowl Odds:
New Orleans Saints +5.5
Indianapolis Colts -5.5
O/U 56.5
The New Orleans Saints are 5.5 point underdogs to win the Super Bowl right now and if you’re thinking to bet on the Colts do it now because the line won't get any better for you.
Both the Saints and the Indianapolis Colts were the best all season but let see how New Orleans got to their first Super Bowl appearance.
They started by crushing Detroit and Philadelphia in their first two games of the season by putting up over 40 points, Drew Brees got over 300 yards in both matches. Then they got a couple of wins against Buffalo and the Jets but neither of those wins were really due to their passing game.
A defining moment caught up to them in week 6 when they met the Giants. Both teams were undefeated and were playing at the highest level but the Saints completely stripped New York and gave them a 48-27 butt kicking.
Along came Miami a week later with a big rushing team that punished the Saints for three quarters. Then Brees and company began making plays on offense and defense to win 46-34.
The week 12 match against the Patriots came along and the Saints didn’t look quite as strong as they did at the beginning of the season. That was the most anticipated Monday Night NFL Game of the season.
Even though the Saints were the favorite you always have doubts because you never know what to expect from a Bill Belichick team. New Orleans secondary completely confused Tom Brady and ended up stealing the show. What appeared to be a showdown at the beginning of the game ended up in a 38-17 butt whipping.
That was the one statement the Saints needed to make.
After that game a lot of injuries came along and hype about the Saints seemed to die down. In week 15 Dallas took advantage of this and stole their undefeated season by winning 24-17 at Louisiana. After that New Orleans forgot how to win during the rest of the regular season and doubts began to rise up.
Savvy NFL betting fans bet smart on the playoffs by looking at the stats, especially if the teams match up pretty well. Third down conversion and takeaways are the key.
The Saints were third in the third down differential department and were second in the takeaways during the regular season with 39 overall.
Those factors ended up striping the Cardinals and Vikings to give the Saints their first Super Bowl appearance.
Keep in mind Robert Meachem, Jeremy Shockey and Sedrick Ellis are pretty banged up but there is no real reason why they can’t play at the Super Bowl, the real question is at what level will they be at?
